Laniakea, My Mother

A dialogue for two monophonic synthesizers

Laniakea, My Mother is my most personal record. I wrote it while my mother was battling cancer. During that period it often felt as if only the two of us existed, and the rest of the world became unreal. The music follows our life together: leaving my father, losing my grandmother (my mother’s mother), and later my stepfather.

It felt as though we were always there for each other, holding hands through every challenge. With her by my side, every hardship seemed surmountable. As a result, the album is a dialogue, crafted using two monophonic synthesizers.

I could not compose after my mother passed away in 2021. For a long time, I felt I would not be able to write again. This work needed to be released.

The cover is a film photo of my mother, with the negative projected onto blank white paper.

Released April 27, 2024.

Parts of this material later found their way into the score for the film Off the Air (2021).
